What plants best compete with tree roots ?

My yard here in Rutherford,NJ has a 235 year old oak tree. What perennials/annuals can I plant that can compete with the roots from this tree and need only 3-4 hours of sun a day ? Please help !

Thanks for writing. Try lily-of-the-valley (Convallaria majalis), bigroot geranium (Geranium macrorrhizum), bishop's weed (Aegopodium podagraria), or epimedium (Epimedium) --- these plants all hold up well in dry shade. Make sure you keep them watered pretty well the first few months they're in the ground because they need moisture in order to develop strong root systems that will allow them to survive beneath the tree.
