stag horn fern

I have a stag horn fern that I brought inside for the winter. The other day when I was watering it, ants started crawling out of the plant where the "horns" come out. This is the first time I have seen this. Can you tell me how to treat this. Also, it needs to be repotted. How is the best way to do that? Thanks for your help. JWynn Decatur, AL

Hi,

Thanks for writing. First off, the ants are probably not a problem; they rarely cause plants any harm --- so unless they're fire ants, I wouldn't bother trying to remove them unless they really bug you.

As far as repotting goes, the process really isn't much different than a traditional plant other than you'll want to choose sphagnum moss instead of potting soil.
