planting from roots

when planting rudbeckia from roots, how long do they usually take to start growing and are there any special things that need to be done?

Are the rudbeckias completely dormant? If not, they should have aboveground shoots, too. As you dig and divide them, make sure that each division has some roots and some shoots (or dormant buds from the crown). The divisions will take several weeks to adjust to their new location, during which time you should make certain that they are watered regularly.
