Planting Asparagus

Can Mary Washington Asparagus crowns be planted on top of hard pan in a raised bed? We live in a mobilehome park and don't have a large space, but do have full day sun. Everett, Wa

Hi, Well it depends on how close to the surface that hard pan is. Asparagus do need to be planted rather deeply so I'm concerned your raised bed might not be deep enough if that hard pan is close to the surface. I would dig down and try to break up the hard pan in some way before I  placed a raised bed over the top. Then, you could experiment and see how your asparagus does.
