How harmful is dyed bark mulch to plants?

I'd LOVE to have a burgundy-colored mulch to match the house; I'm debating over rocks or wood chips. For the wood chips, I've read that the dyes in colored bark mulches can leach into the soil & be harmful to plants. Is this true? Just HOW harmful is it?? (Is it not worth the risk?) Are there any OTHER options for a burgundy-colored mulch???

There quite likely are various dyes used to color mulch, but I've not seen any conclusive research to indicate that they are harmful to plants. Look for the Soil & Mulch Council certification on any mulch you purchase to be guaranteed of a quality product.
