Choosing the right mulch/bedding coverage for winter
How do you choose the best mulch not only for finishing your garden, but for protecting your perinnials over winter in zone 4? I have thought about cocoa beans and I would like a dark brown mulch to compliment my house, but I do need to think about putting to bed, my garden in Wisconsin. Thanks! Reedsburg Wisconsin
Choose a mulch that looks good to you, has a reasonable cost, and that won't mat down. In your area, cocoa bean mulch tends to be expensive, but is attractive, and if piled several inches deep would provide winter protection, too. You might consider colored bark mulch that has been stained dark brown to match or complement the colors on your house. Usually bark mulch is less expensive.
