5.5" deep window boxes. What can survive!!

Our contractor build 2 window boxes that are very shallow 5.5" by 74" wide. Mostly sunny mornings, shady afternoons. I want bright and colorful with low maintenance. What can survive with a shallow root system but can look full as it's such a wide box. Thanks

Virtually any small to medium annual flower can survive in a soil depth of 5 1/2 inches. More would be better, but as long as they get adequate water and fertilizer, they can grow with shallow soil. Your best bets may be to choose plants that are drought-tolerant and will perform well in partial shade. You can find ones that would work for your situation by using the advanced search option in our plant encyclopedia.
