Why tomatoes crack?

I planted tomatoes, the first four were very good but now they show a crack on the fruit and they are small. Why do they crack?

Some varieties of tomato are more susceptible to cracking than others. Cracking develops because the epidermis or skin doesn't expand as quickly as the interior portions of the fruit. Alterations in growth rate, often associated with fluctuating moisture levels, are quite often the reason behind the cracks. Wide fluctuations in temperature can also induce cracking.
