what can i do to make my 6 year old potted orange tree bloom?
I HAVE A POTTED ORANGE TREE FROM FLORIDA THAT I BROUGHT HOME TO MINNESOTA IN 2006. IT HAS GROWN VERY WELL IN SIZE. WE PUT IT OUTSIDE ALL SUMMER AND BRING IT IN, IN THE WINTER. HOWEVER IN NEVER HAS HAD A BLOOM ON IT. WHY?
Thanks for writing. It depends ---if it's a seed-grown variety, it may not be old enough to bloom. They're notorious for taking years and years to first flower. If it's a hybrid (named) variety, you might look at the growing conditions. Cool temperatures --- around 50-60 degrees F --- encourage better flowering than if the plants are in the 70s F during winter.
Do you cut the plant back in the fall when you bring it in? If so, that can decrease flowering. Do you fertilize it in fall and winter? That can also decrease flowering.
Hope this helps!
