How do I overwinter potted strawberries?

I live in Maryland and have two strawberry plants in hanging baskets and would like to know what needs to be done to care for them for the winter so they will come back next spring. Thank you Sally

Thanks for writing! Your best bet is to "plant" the hanging baskets by digging a hole in the ground and setting the baskets in, then filling in around them with soil. That will keep the baskets insulated so the plants don't freeze out over winter. If you don't have a spot where you can do that, then your next best bet is to store them someplace cold (such as a garage or shed), but not below zero for the winter. Unfortunately, you can't leave the baskets outside all winter without protection.
