Growing Meyer lemons outside

I live in North Carolina, and want to grow meyer lemons. Can I plant them in the ground and leave them? I dont really want to plant them in a pot and bring indoors.

Meyer lemons would not be hardy in North Carolina. They can take a few degrees of frost for several hours at a time, but extended periods below freezing will kill them.
