Figs don't ripen
Figs need a long, hot growing season to ripen properly. So, although the plant may survive winters in New England, it will be a challenge to give the plant enough heat units to ripen fruit there. In areas such as yours where short, cool summers are prevalent, it helps to grow figs along a sunny south wall that will reflect heat back onto the plant. You could also construct a mini-greenhouse over the fig tree to trap more heat and ripen the fruits.
