Why did my dahlia blooms shrivel up in just a day?

I live in Columbia, SC. I have a dahlia plant in a terracotta pot that was doing just fine this morning. This evening, however, three of the blooms have shriveled up! I watered the plant this morning because it was supposed to (and did) reach 97 degrees Fahrenheit. What happened?! Please help!

Most dahlias require cool temperatures to thrive. When the heat rises to the upper 90s, the blooms can shrivel up in just one day. And plants in terra-cotta pots dry out quickly, often requiring watering more than once per day. You may have better luck placing your potted dahlia in a cool, shady spot on hot days.
