Help! What will grow under spruce and pine trees?

I would like to know what types of plants, if any, will grow under spruce trees? The two trees are on the north east side of my house. I am planning to make a sitting area under the trees and would love plants that would attract birds and butterflies...I appreciate any help you can give me.
