Ask Better Homes & Gardens

Experts and BHG readers answer.

Camelias with no flowers.

My camelias get big buds but turn a bit brown on the ends and never bloom out. They stay on the bush for weeks like this. I am in the south Houston TX area and my bushes are about 5 years old and have not filled out much in this time. Any suggestions?

Thanks for writing. One common reasons camellia buds will fail to open is that the plants dry out while the buds are forming. Does this sound like it may be a possibility?

Big fluctuations in temperature can also stop the buds from opening, especially if you have a wave of unseasonably warm weather.
