All growth/little bloom hydrangea?

One of our hydrangea bushes that bloomed nicely last year has one flower but lots of new growth this year. Why? Thank you. djw WV

Hydrangea flower buds are less hardy than vegetative buds. It's quite possible that your hydrangea's flower buds were damaged by winter cold, but the leaf buds were not. Late season pruning removes next year's flower buds. If you prune late in the year, that can prevent flowering the following year.
