Peony bulbs won't open
Bud blight, which causes failure of flower buds to open, is usually caused by a fungal disease such as botrytis or phytophora. Both can be controlled to a degree by cultural methods, most important of which is to remove all affected growth and destroy it. At the end of the growing season be sure to cut down and remove all vegetataive growth. These diseases may have come into your garden with the new plants. Make sure that the soil is well drained and avoid watering after midday so that the leaves remain damp at nightfall. Provide good air circulation between the plants. If you use chemcals on your garden, there are several fungicides that work well. Check with your local Cooperative Extension office (blue or yelllow pages) to seee what they recommend for your locality.
