Ostrich Fern problem

Every year my Ostrich Ferns (which are planted in an island bed with a mature flowering crabapple tree) come up beautifully. Then they develop brown spots and fold up, looking ratty. What's wrong?

Ostrich fern needs rich soil and consistent moisture, and since yours start out looking nice, and return each year, my guess is that the plants are simply responding to moisture stress. If that's the problem, just water them more often.

That's my best guess about this problem, since ostrich ferns don't typically have any serious disease or pest problems.
