mushrooms in mulch

I live in New Jersey. This summer we put down a load of hardwood mulch; now we have mushrooms growing in it. What can i do to keep them from sprouting?

The mushrooms are decaying the organic matter in the mulch. As long as adequate moisture is available, they will continue to grow until the mulch has completely decayed. The most practical solution is to rake out the mushrooms as they appear to knock them down.
