What plants can I grow to cover up ugly fading foliage that comes from spring bulbs?
You can solve this problem in a couple of ways. The first is to plant spring-blooming perennials that put on a good show at the same time as the bulbs. Favorites include ajuga (Ajuga), pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris), and periwinkle (Vinca minor). These perennials won’t go dormant as bulbs do, so you’ll have something in the spot all summer. Your other choice is to plant perennial partners that come into their own after the bulbs, so you have an extended season of interest. Smaller perennials that bloom later include coral bells (Heuchera), bellflower (Campanula carpatica or C. portenschlagiana), or leadwort (Ceratostigma plumbaginoides).
