How do I replant Iris?

We recently purchased a home and are completely redoing the landscaping. I need to dig and replant the iris, but I don't know anything about them (sun, shade, how deep to plant them, etc.) They are the tall purple iris you see everywhere.

You likely have bearded iris (Iris germanica), which need full sun and good drainage. The rhizome (the horizontal stem that the foliage grows from) need to be visible at the soil surface. Planting them deeper encourages rot and disease. Iris are best divided and moved in mid- to late summer, but you can move them earlier in the year if you must.
