How can I start an avacado from the seed?

I am trying to start a avacodo Plant from the seed of one I cut open,Do I Spit the seed at the bottom or do I just put it in water with toothpicks holding it? I live in zone 5. Canal Fulton, OH.

The usual way to start an avocado from seed is to suspend the rounded end in water with toothpicks holding it in place. You can also partially bury the seed in potting soil to get it to sprout.
