compost

I have in my backyard loads of old leaves and corn stalks left from last fall just scattered everywhere. One of the places where it is just piled up is where I want to place a vegetable garden. I want to know if the soil underneth is still good, its been covered by this stuff for a couple of years now. I also would like to know if the material would be good to start my compost heap? please help!!

Hi,

Thanks for writing. It sounds like the soil underneath that area is probably great for a vegetable garden and compost pile --- if you've had organic matter like leaves and cornstalks there for a couple of years, they've probably been starting to compost naturally and enriching the soil for you.
