Bird of paradise care

We have a bird of Paradise in our back yard, it is large and green but does not bloom any flowers, it had part of one at the beginning of the year, but it just dosent have flowers like I feel it should. We live in the Central Valley of Calif and it gets hot here, 100 and above. Can you please help me to figure out why our Bird of Paradise has no flowers. Thank you, Kathie

Hi Kathie,

Thanks for writing. Bird of paradise blooms best in a spot with full sun and well-drained soil. So be sure your plant isn't getting too much shade or it's in a spot where the soil stays too wet.

Do you feed your bird of paradise? That helps it bloom better, too --- especially if you have poor soil. You can use any general-purpose garden fertilizer. The plant responds both to organic and traditional plant foods.
