There are many low-maintenance plants from which to choose. The key is to select plants adapted to the location that you plant them. A good place to start is to use plants native to your area, or areas with similar climates. And pay attention to the mature size of the plant, allowing ample room for it to grow so that you don't have to constantly prune it. Amend the soil with organic matter to help roots get off to a good start.

In general, trees and shrubs require less care than flowers. Perennials and bulbs are usually lower-maintenance than annual flowers.
