The key here is how much light your patio gets. With tall trees I'm assuming it's pretty shady? Basically, if the area gets less than 6 hours of sun a day, you can consider shade-loving plants. More than that, go with sun-lovers. If you want plants you can bring inside during the winter to enjoy then, I'd go with houseplants such as palms, snake plant, bromelliads, etc. You can generally find a wide selection of houseplants at Home Depot or Lowe's. If you want flowering plants, go with annuals. It truly depends on what your light conditions are. If you like, go to our Plant Encyclopedia on this site and do an ADVANCED search. Plug in your criteria and it should give you a list of plants that match your needs. Or, just take an hour or two and browse Lowe's or Home Depot and see what catches you eye. Just check light conditions on the plant tags.
