Why don't my sweet peas have a scent?

I planted sweet peas and they are beautiful, but they don't have a scent. Why not?

Sweet peas (Lathyrus) have a reputation for being fragrant, but not all varieties are packed with scent. Some selections have been bred for especially large flowers or interesting colors - these hybrids usually have little or no fragrance. Other selections are bred for their fragrance. To determine which selections you want to grow, read the catalog or seed packet description. Both sources should mention how fragrant a particular type is.
