Should I pinch back Lisianthus when planting?

When purchasing and planting pots of lisianthus, is it necessary to pinch the tip back to encourage side shoots? I've read that otherwise they only have one long stem.

Well it depends on how spindly your plants are. I try to buy lisianthus that's short and squat to begin with and then I just leave them alone. But if my plants are really tall, with just one spindly stalk, I generally pinch it back to encourage side shoot development.
