Why do some annuals like zinnias, fade in color?I live in Santa Barbara CA. and we did have some extremely hot days. thanks.

The colors in flowers are the result of pigments produced by the plant. There are several categories: anthocyanins (reds), carotenes (yellows), chlorophyll (green), etc. All of these pigments can be affected by temperature and light exposure. Generally pigments are more intense in cool conditions and in bright light.
