Can I successfully grow a small banana tree in Ohio in summer in a patio pot? Must I always put it in the ground each summer?
Bananas can be grown in containers successfully. It's best to use a relatively dwarf variety for this, however. Some bananas naturally remain under 5 feet tall. They're easier to manage than types that grow taller than 20 feet in the ground. I keep a red-leafed banana on my front porch, where it's somewhat protected from the wind, which can shred the leaves if the plant is too exposed. Remember to move the banana plant indoors before frost hits in the fall.
