squirrels digging and eating my garden
If it makes you feel any better, I also have a squrrel problem in my NY garden! First, make sure that there are no bird feeders around where they can get food. I have also found that raking up the acorns and other nuts in fall seems to deter them. One fall I was unable to rake and had a bumper crop of squirrels feeding on the fallen acorns that winter, with of course a bumper crop of young squirrels come spring. For planters, it is prudent to cover the surface of the soil with netting and to plant so that growth comes through the holes. Bulbs should be planted deeper than usual or can be set in cages of hardware cloth. Sometimes putting a layer of gravel over the bulbs also deters their digging. Some gardeners are using coffee grounds as a mulch and have had good results although I have not done that personnaly. Deterrents such as Ropel and SHAKE-AWAY Small Critter Repellent Granules are quite good I've found. The latter is based on fox urine and has a slight odor. It must be reapplied after rain. Hope this helps.
