Ants in potted plants DO cause problems
I disagree with Doug's answer to "ants in potted plants." They DO cause problems -- nests in the pots cause the plants to suffer & they don't thrive. I submerge the pot (plant and all) in water until the ants are gone. My plants immediately perk up once the ants are gone!
I think that what Doug may have been trying to get at is that ants don't feed directly on plants or plants' roots. Certainly they can cause problems by "farming" aphids or scale insects that feed on the plants' sap and thereby decrease plant vigor.
