My fried chicken recipe calls for baking powder. Why?

in a fried chicken recipe I found, the recipe calls for baking powder and to let it rest awhile,is that correct to do? if so what's the baking powder used for.

I suspect that there was probably buttermilk involved as well. If so, the baking powder may be some adding some lightness to the batter, reacting with the buttermilk as it stands.
