Painting over a factory finish

I would like to paint my wooden plnatation shutters white. They are currently a medium wood tone. They came from the factory (custom made)with some type of electrostatic finish on them and I am told they cannot be painted. Your inout is appreciated.

Well, if they told you the finish on them can't be painted, then I guess I would follow that advice.  If it is bugging you that much, though, talk to a paint shop and see what they have to say about it.  The only other option would be to change the shutters.
