What you want to do is scrape and sand off any loose paint on the woodwork. You have 2 options what you want to do. First of all you want to oil prime any areas that are bare wood or all if needed then apply 2 coats of alkyd  paint as they do not make oil paint any more. alkyd can be used in place of oil. 2nd option is same prep as above and primer but you can use a latex or enamel paint. the only thing is if you use latex that will always have to be done in latex as oil cant go over latex but latex can go over oil.
