How can I tile over wood flooring?

We live in a timber framed home. All the floors are yellow pine. The floors on the second floor are actually the ceiling for the first floor. I want to put tile down in the second floor bathroom. Would that mean we would have to put 3/4-inch subfloor over the wood flooring as has been suggested to compensate for the wood movement? Are there any new products out there that would make that unnecessary? The 1-inch or so sill would seem to be unattractive and clumsy. The house is ten years old.

I would put down ¼” tile backer and then tile over that. I would not recommend tiling directly over the pine floor.
