Will placing furniture in front of an air return be a problem?

The wall of my great room has two cold air returns. One return is near the ceiling and the other return is near the floor. I want to place a console in front of the lower return, which would cover half of the return. Will this affect the efficiency of heating and cooling my ranch house?

I doubt that it will be any problem in a large, open room. The cold air return is the passive side of your heating and cooling system. So as long as return air can get around the side of the console to keep air circulating through the room back to the furnace you’ll be fine—especially since you have two returns in the room.
