Can I install granite over subway tile on the backsplash in my kitchen?

My kitchen has white subway tile on the backsplash. It is worn, cracked, and discolored. The tile was put in with mortar, and I don't want to remove it. I was wondering if I could place granite over the tile if I use masonry adhesive.

It is hard to get adhesives to stick to tiles because of the gloss finish of the tile. The other concern is that if you add more layers of tile you might overlap the edge of the sink. I would recommend removing the tile. If you are going to cover the entire area with granite, you can replace any damaged sheetrock with new pieces and you won’t have to tape it.
