I would like to design a storage area in the countertop where I can store my curling iron, hair dryer, straightener and have an electrical outlet inside so that I can do my thing and store them away. it would be nice to just be able to lift a middle section of the counter and pull them out, but the hard surfaces are so heavy that it might be cumbersome. Or can you recommend a design for something that could sit on top of the counter between the two sinks that could achieve the same results?

We do this all the time.  We install a small cabinet that actually sits on top of the vanity top between the two sinks or off to the side.  If you install an outlet in the cabinet, it makes for a very easy way to retrieve your grooming essentials and store them easily.  A lifting countertop seems like trouble, not just because it is heavy.  It seems like it would be hard to keep water from splashing into the storage area.
